Q&A with H.C. DeBoard

01. writing

What inspired you to become a fiction writer?

My journey into fiction writing was shaped by the struggles and challenges I’ve faced throughout my life. From growing up in difficult circumstances to dealing with personal loss, these experiences have given me a deep understanding of human nature and the complexities of emotion. Writing allows me to explore these themes—grief, growth, and self-discovery—in ways that are both creative and cathartic. Through storytelling, I’ve learned to confront the difficult questions about life, identity, and the universe that I’ve often pondered.

What themes do you explore in your books?

My books focus heavily on human struggle, emotional resilience, and personal growth. In stories like Souls of the Forgotten and Grief Warriors, I explore how people navigate life’s toughest challenges—whether that’s confronting mortality, battling inner demons, or learning to find peace amid chaos. My writing often delves into the emotional depths of my characters, as I believe that’s where true growth happens. Every struggle they face is an opportunity for self-discovery, and I aim to show that even in the darkest moments, there’s a path forward.

Your writing blends genres like science fiction and surrealism. What draws you to these genres?

I’ve always been fascinated by the boundaries of reality and the unknown. Science fiction, in particular, allows me to explore complex ideas about existence, the universe, and humanity’s place in it. Whether it’s the world of Holographic Realities or the eerie predictions in Souls of the Forgotten, I love pushing the limits of what’s possible and using speculative fiction to examine deeper truths. Surrealism offers an outlet to portray inner emotional struggles and psychological battles in ways that are both vivid and symbolic, allowing me to explore abstract concepts that are often difficult to express directly.

02. readers

What do you want readers to take away from your stories?

I hope readers walk away with a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. Every story I write explores the complexities of human emotion, personal growth, and the fight to overcome adversity. I want my readers to feel that they’re not alone in their struggles, and that no matter how impossible the journey may seem, there’s always room for transformation. My goal is for them to find a sense of hope, resilience, and a reminder that growth often comes from the most challenging experiences.

How do your books help readers reflect on their own emotional journeys?

My books are designed to mirror the emotional struggles many face in life. Whether it’s dealing with loss in Grief Warriors or confronting existential questions in Holographic Realities, I want readers to see themselves in the characters’ struggles. By exploring these emotional landscapes, readers can reflect on their own journeys, recognize the challenges they’ve overcome, and gain a deeper understanding of their personal growth. My hope is that through my stories, readers find validation and strength in their own emotional experiences.

What kind of connection do you hope to establish with your readers?

Through my writing, I aim to create an emotional connection that transcends the page. I want my readers to feel that they are not alone in their struggles, that their pain, growth, and triumphs are shared experiences. The characters I write may face extreme situations, but the emotions they endure—grief, confusion, hope—are universal. I hope readers can find solace in knowing that they are understood, and that their own personal stories matter just as much as those in the books. It’s a connection that reminds us we are all on this journey together.
